How Does a Tornado Get its Name?
Hurricanes are very large and they usually acquire names such as,
Mitchell, Katrina, Andrew or Tracy. Yet a tornado is very short,
the average going for only 1-3 minutes so there is no point in naming them.
Also there is about 1,000 tornadoes reported each year
so there would end up being about 4 “Tornado Anna’s” a year.
The word tornado is originally from the Spanish word tornar-meaning ‘to turn’.
